County Investigating Murder Near Nicholson Street

Update, 9:10 p.m.: NBC Washington reports that police have identified the victim as 17-year-old Erlin Alexis Romero-Ramirez, now saying that he was shot about 8 p.m. Thursday in a park on Nicholson Street.

NBC also reported that police said they are looking into the possibility that it was a gang-related killing.

Update, 5:22 p.m.: Police agencies are shuttling inquiries back and forth, with county police claiming rights to the investigation of the homicide, but shoveling press inquiries to both U.S. and county parks police.

Inquiries made to both agencies were referred back to county police.

Update, 12:33 p.m.: Cpl. Mike Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department -- who is investigating the homicide aspect of the incident -- said no further information is available regarding who the teen is or where he was from.

A juvenile male was shot and killed Sept. 16 on the Sligo Creek Trail Bridge near the 2600 block of Nicholson Street within the City of Hyattsville limits.

City of Hyattsville Police were the first to respond but the park and trail are Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission property.  M-NCPPC Police protocols, they have turned the homicide investigation over to Prince George's County Homicide division.

The Gazette reported earlier this morning that the murder took place around 6:43 p.m.

Rodriguez said the caller said his or her brother had been shot. Police found a 16- or 17-year-old boy lying on the ground shot, and the teen was taken to an area hospital, where he died, Rodriguez said.

The teen's name has not been released. No arrests have been made in the case, and police are still looking for suspects.

Abby Sandel, spokesperson for the City of Hyattsville, said the city is not able to respond to inquries because it is not the investigating agency.
