A century-old College Park church celebrated its anniversary Sunday with a mass led by Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the Archbishop of Washington, DC.

Holy Redeemer Church was founded in June of 1912 on Berwyn Road. Twenty years later a Catholic school was also opened across the street. The church and school continued to grow and was expanded and moved to its current location in 1952. The original church building, now called Fealy Hall, still stands.

"As Catholics 100 years later, we are called to be part of the New Evangelization and to do our part to share the Gospel message," Wuerl said in his homily. "The unwavering message and call that we have as Catholics has not changed even though the world around us has changed to be more secular, materialistic and individualistic."

The church continues to grow its parish, including serving generations of families who were original members of the church. 

The cardinal prayed for the future generations.

"The future is ours too. Who could have ever said what was to come?" he asked. "So too we must be ready to address the future full of faith."
