Household Cleaning Mix in Hyattsville Apartment Complex Sends Four to Hospital
A new tenant mixed household cleaning materials, creating an odor that spread through the entire apartment complex, sending four to the hospital.
At approximately 10:20 p.m. Thursday, a call was made to 911 to report an unknown odor in a three-story, multi-family apartment building in the 7000 block of Highview Terrace in Hyattsville.
A fire department engine arrived shortly thereafter, and upon investigation discovered that a new tenant had mixed common household cleaning items, which caused an irritant odor to spread throughout the building, according to a press release from Acting Maj. Paul Cruz of the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department.
As a result of the odor, four tenants were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation. None of their conditions are considered to be life threatening.
Those taken to hospitals ranged in age from 22 to 65. The incident drew 21 firefighers and paramedics, and seven units were dispatched.
Additional fire and EMS units arrived and helped tenants ventilate the building and remove the irritant odor. As a precaution, hazardous materials units and a medical ambulance bus were dispatched to the building as well, though they were only used in the investigation.
This story has been corrected. An earlier version of this story gave the incorrect time for when the 911 call was made. We regret the error.
