Local Residents Experience Brief Power Outage

Parts of University Park, Riverdale Park, Hyattsville, and College Park were briefly without power Monday morning.

At around 9:30 a.m. this morning, a large swath of University Park, and some areas of Riverdale Park, College Park and Hyattsville went unexpectedly dark.

The outage was caused when a tree limb fell across all three phases near Underwood Street, according to Pepco spokesperson Marcus Beal.

At the height of the outage, 423 customers were without power, and signals were dark at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and East-West Highway. Riverdale Park police were on site directing traffic.

Residents report that crews reached the scene quickly, and power was restored to most homes and businesses within the hour. As of 10:22 a.m., the limb had been cleared and only four customers were still without power, said Beal.

The outage comes three days after more than 30,000 Pepco customers lost power across Prince George's County when a tree fell on a transmission line in Camp Springs.
