Pizza Place Coming to Former Professional Coffee Shop

A group of sibling restaurateurs are transforming the site of the former Professional Coffee Shop in downtown Hyattsville into a new pizza restaurant which will be opening soon. 

Carlos Gutierrez, who owns the as-yet unnamed pizza shop with his brother Roger and sister Kelly, said that the new restaurant will focus on quick eats like pizza, subs, sandwiches, breakfast items and coffee. The new restaurant will also feature delivery services. Gutierrez said that he and his partners plan to keep the store open late, too, with closing times at either 11 p.m. or 12 p.m. 

"We're thinking about getting a brick oven," said Gutierrez. "But we're just getting all the renovations done right now."

Gutierrez said that while a new name has not been decided on, he and the other owners have given thought to keeping the "Professional" name as a tribute to the history of the building. 

A hard opening date has not yet been set, but Gutierrez said he expects to open shop in "about a month."

Gutierrez said that the new restaurant will also have wifi internet for customers to use.

The Professional Coffee Shop operated for years at 5314 Baltimore Avenue, and was known for its early morning breakfast fare. The Professional Coffee Shop closed last year. The former coffee shop owners, in an article in the July 2012 Hyattsville Life and Times, blamed the closure on a sagging economy and rising rents. 

The Gutierrez siblings already know at least one neighboring business well. The owners of Pike el Chalateco, one door to the south, are the parents of the Gutierrez siblings.
