Update, 12:50 p.m.: The Prince George's County Office of Emergency Management has opened three shelters for county residents as they prepare for Hurricane Sandy; one is “pet friendly.”

Charles H. Flowers High School, located at 10001 Ardwick Ardmore Rd. in Springdale, MD, will take in owners who evacuate with their pets, but it is not a drop off for unattended pets, according to Carol Terry, a spokesperson for the county Department of Environmental Resources.

Charles H. Flowers High School was opened this morning followed by Gwynn Park High School at 13800 Brandywine Rd in Brandywine, and University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum at 7950 Baltimore Avenue in College Park.

Ritchie Coliseum is pet-friendly.

The county has plans to open more shelters based on storm damage, and will announce their locations as they open. Residents can check the county website for updates or call the 311 call center. It will be open from 7 a.m. to midnight Monday.

Nurses from the county's health department will be on hand at the shelters, which are managed by American Red Cross, the county's Department of Social Services and the county's Department of Family Services.
