City officials will be updating residents tonight at a special community meeting on the design progress for scheduled street infrastructure improvements on Banner and Buchanan streets and 40th Avenue.
Those streets comprise one third of a three-part project to improve the condition of the streets, drainage and access to Magruder Park in the southern Hyattsville neighborhood satirically known as Soggy Bottom. To that end, the city is also in the early stages of improving the Magruder Park trailhead at the end of Crittenden Street, and imrpoving the road surface and adding sidewalks in the area of Crittenden and 40th Place.
Funds to design the project have been set aside in this year's budget. Funds to build and complete the project will need to be allocated during the next fiscal year, which begins on July 1, 2013.
According to a preliminary timeline laid out by the city, all three parts of the Soggy Bottom improvements should be completed by mid 2016. Construction is not slated to begin until at least mid-2013.
The community meeting will take place at the Hyattsville Municipal Building at 4310 Gallatin Street in downtown Hyattsville tonight at 7 p.m.
