By a little after midnight Sunday morning, members of local law enforcement agencies perched on a local rooftop had raised more than $2,700 for Special Olympics Maryland.

The event, Cops on Rooftops, saw members of the Hyattsville City Police Department ascend to the roof of the Duncan Donuts at 3030 Queens Chapel Road in Mount Rainier to raise funds.

Police began their elevated fundraiser at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. The fundraiser will continue until noon a.m. today.

By midnight Saturday, four Hyattsville police officers, including Chief Doug Holland, were getting settled in for the night on the roof. With temperatures hovering in the low-to-mid 50s the police were preparing themselves for a not-too-frigid evening taking in the view of Mount Rainier's Queen's Chapel corridor.

The $2,700 fundraising haul, as of midnight, was a little short of the pace needed to reach the $6,000 goal which the local police departments had set for themselves.

Last year's local Cops on Rooftops fundraiser, held in August, netted more than $5,000 for Special Olympics Maryland.

I was under the inpression that the Dunkin Donut Shop was in Hyattsville, MD. I have lived here for 47 years and I guess we learn something new everyday, I didn't know it was in MT Rainier. Am I right or wrong thinking it is in Hyattsville?

Deb is partially correct. The shop is on the west side of Queens Chapel Rd., which is not Mt. Rainier. It is actually in the unincorporated subdivision, Avondale Terrace. We have a Hyattsville mailing address as well.

FYI, this community decided in 2008 to begin the process of identifying ourselves in this corridor (i.e. the east end of the Chillum area) as Avonridge. We are hopeful that our new name will help eliminate this type of confusion in the future.

I'll admit, I lived in the immediate area all but 10 of my 29 years, and I had never heard of Avonridge. I also assumed the shop was in Mount Rainier. Would you be able to email me (Michael.Theis@Patch.com) a map of the borders of Avonridge? I assume it's a neighborhood within the census designated place of Chillum, no?

I'm with Deb, I thought that Dunkin Donut shop was considered Hyattsville, MD too! My husband made a point to me that people probably got confused and went the the Dunkin Donut shop near the PG Plaza metro which is definitely Hyattsville, (of course there is no roof top there). Perhaps they would have raised more money if if was held this past August like last year.
