Trends: Prince George's County Dist. 2 Has Seen Boost in Hispanic Population, Decrase in African Americans Since 2000

A report by the Urban Institute indicates demographic shifts in the Hyattsville area between 2000 and 2010.

County Council district 2 experienced "moderate to large" increases in its Hispanic population and corresponding decreases in its African-American population over the previous decade, according to an analysis from the Urban Institute.

The study, based on U.S. Census and American Community Survey data, looked at demographic shifts in Prince George's County between 2000 and 2010.

District 2 includes Hyattsville, Brentwood, North Brentwood, Mount Rainier and large swaths of unincorporated areas north and west of Hyattsville. The district is represented by Councilman Will Campos of Hyattsville.

This district experienced “small to moderate” decreases in real income, and decreases in education levels, the report indicates.

Countywide, the African-American population grew 10 percent, the Hispanic population grew 127 percent, and the non-Hispanic white population fell by 34 percent over the course of the decade.
