UTC Resident Talks About Fatal Hyattsville Stabbing

On June 30, Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews, 21, was fatally stabbed at the plaza just outside of David Cron’s home at University Town Center's One Independence Plaza.

When David Cron moved into his condominium at University Town Center just more than three years ago, he expected more out of the location where he and his parents also owned a Three Brothers franchise.

“Seeing it decline every day is frustrating, sad, depressing,” Cron said. “[UTC] has not lived up to what it’s supposed to be. It’s not being supported by anyone.

On June 30, Leonard Raynod Smith-Matthews, 21, was fatally stabbed at the plaza just outside of Cron’s home. Prince George’s County Police, who are investigating the case, have no suspects in custody at this time.

“It’s kind of surreal to me,” Cron said. “It’s upsetting and disturbing that happening 100 feet away from my door.”

From his work at Three Brothers, Cron said he has seen the area, once billed by locals as the next Downtown Silver Spring, take a tumble.

“Within the first few months I saw kids starting to hang out and cause problems,” he said. “We went to UTC and said we need a police presence. They basically shooed us out of the office.”

Representatives from University Town Center have not returned requests for comment.

The Crons’ restaurant closed around Christmas but has since re-opened under new owners. They cited property management, parking and the economic downturn as reasons for the fold.

David Cron said there were often youth loitering and being rowdy, skateboarding, yelling and screaming and running around UTC. He said he saw high school aged kids fighting on numerous occasions when the Hyattsville Police Department was then called.

Despite his concerns with the area, Cron has remained in the building.

“I’ve stayed there because I don’t really have a choice,” he said. “I would lose about $100,000 that I’ve invested [in my condo] because of the economy. I cannot imagine raising a family there. People did have hope …. It’s just fallen flat on its face.”

It's a shame too. I'm following the HHS lease protest and from reading the location requirement, UTC meets every single requirement and even exceeds them. Every amenity listed is within half a mile. I'm not sure if the management is just totally inept or what. The location and amenities don't get any better.

Stop lumping skateboarders in with the bad apples. Most of the time real skateboards ie trying to do tricks stay out of the way and don't cause trouble. If the police were around more and got to know the people who hung/hang around this like this may not be prevented but maybe witnesses would come forward.

If you skateboard at UTC, you are violating regulations set forth by the owners of UTC and enforced by the Hyattsville City Police Department. It is private property and there are signs posted all over the center prohibiting skateboarding and loitering.

skateboarding is also noisy (UTC happens to be a residential area), and it's disruptive and potentially dangerous to pedestrians. i'm not an engineer, but i can't imagine skateboarding is very good for the various types of materials (cement, inlaid stone, etc.) that are used on the flooring of the UTC plaza.

So it feels like a bunch of outsiders came into hyattsville, built what they though would be a private osais and now true locals are coming in. Saying skateboarding is noisy is a very flimsy excuse. Don't move into the middle of a city if you can't stand noise.

With the felling of private property inside a city with out any gates is asking for trouble. Seems more of the same "be seen and not heard" rhetoric.

so because someone is a "true local" (whatever that means -- i've never checked a skateboarder's ID), he or she has the right to break the law by skateboarding where it's forbidden? and he or she will not be stopped unless someone builds a "gate" to keep him or her out? are we talking about a human being or a rabid pit bull? i would hope that the former would be equipped with common courtesy, reasonable judgment, and at least half a brain.

and UTC was never meant to be a "private oasis"; it was meant to be a place for people ("true locals" and non-locals alike) to live, work, dine, shop, go to the movies, play in the fountain (mainly kids), and attend concerts and community events.

If you feel so strongly about skateboarding and loitering, why don't you ask your community to build a skateboarding-loitering park where you live.
