Week In Review: bin Laden Dead, Hyattsville Elections and Blogs
Missed the Patch news this week? No problemo! Check out our weekly roundup here.
Of course, the big news this past week was the death of Osama bin Laden.
Patch covered the wild celebrations in College Park after it was announced that the terrorist had been killed by U.S. Navy SEALS. We also heard from students at local schools, who shared their thoughts on bin Laden’s death, 10 years after the 9/11 attacks on New York City, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania.
Hyattsville resident David Whiddens shared his memories of working that day at the Pentagon as a member of the Metropolitan Police Department.
The other big story this week was Marc Tartaro’s win in the city’s mayoral race and the upsets in wards 1 and 2, where incumbents lost to City Council newbies.
Patch photographer Chris Suspect snapped scenes from the evening, while writer Karl Herchenroeder got Tartaro’s initial reaction to his win. On Thursday Patch posted the names and number of write-in votes for the mayor’s race.
In other news this week:
- Patch talked with City Administrator Gregory Rose about the state of the city’s finances;
- Riverdale Park-University Park Patch editor Sonia Dasgupta took some photographs of dogs at Patch’s Scrappy Hour at Heurich Park;
- Videographer Matt Cruz covered an event where local and regional officials worked to put out fires; and
- Patch played part of a speech from Chris Brophy, who ran for mayor and lost to Tartaro last week.
This coming week look for video interviews with Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, more analysis of city elections and more blogs from your neighbors.
