Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The split will be phased in over the next four years beginning July 1 with the new budget year. That bill also includes a doubling of…

Update: UTC Towers Sold Back to Lender

High rise complex, assessed at $65 million, to be sold on courthouse steps today.

Update - 2:30 p.m. - The Towers at University Town Center will likely be bought back by the mortgage lender, Delaware based ML-CFC Commercial Mortgage Trust 2007-8 LLC, following a quick auction outside of the Prince George's County Circuit Court in Upper Marlboro earlier this afternoon.  The complex was purchased for $39.15 million, the opening bid. Though a small group of potential buyers had gathered for the auction, none placed any bids higher than the opener.  Though ML-CFC owns the winning bid, the purchase still has to be finalized by the circuit court before it becomes official.  Original article:  If you're looking for a bargain on a high-rise housing complex, then today might be your lucky day.  The massive, 244-unit, 910 bed …

And, I don't know where you think this development is, but there are no liquor stores or yoga studios, pet stores, or bakeries in PG plaza. I don't know if you've been paying attention to local news regarding development, but TOD is hot, and walkable communities are the future. Cafritz? Belcrest Development? Arts District? Landy Property? Any of that ring a bell?   more ›

For nearly a two-week period we asked our Patch readers in Prince George's County to tell us which restaurants were the best within their region for a meal with mom this Sunday, May 13. In Bowie and Upper Marlboro, the decision was simple for our readers as Rip's Country Inn took another Readers' Choice win with 69 percent of the vote. Rip's Manager Bill Burgess was pleased to hear the Bowie establishment won top honors in this week’s Readers’ Choice. They will be serving a buffet-style brunch from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the western part of the county— College Park, Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and …

Cafritz Hearing is Adjourned

Residents, officials and attorneys provided testimony and closing arguments at the sixth and final district council hearing for Cafritz.

5:20 p.m.: Hearing is Adjourned Seven hours after it began today, the hearing before the Prince George's County District Council is adjourned--without a continuance. Before Harrison dropped the gavel, People's Counsel Stan Brown provided a closing argument. He reminded listeners that his role does not involve supporting one side or the other. Among his points: He noted that the planning board took more than its allowable 105 days to submit a recommendation to the district council, which "is not fatal to this application, but it is there," he said. He also said that the planning board's recommendation came with conditions rather than the allowable modifications. "One could argue the planning board decision is erroneous because it allows for…

If 80% of the area residents testified as against the zoning change, that would be noteworthy! Even if it is an 80-20 split as to those who testified, it does not represent a majority opinion of the surrounding communities, only of those who showed up to the hearing. As was pointed out in the hearing numerous times, no one has a proxy to speak for others at a public hearing. In most development …   more ›

Mulligan's Wins Readers' Choice for Best Mothers' Day Brunch

The restaurant located at the University of Maryland golf course clubhouse took the poll with a come-from-behind win.

Mulligan's Grill and Pub was the big winner in the most recent Readers' Choice poll for best Mothers' Day brunch, but don't bother trying for a reservation this Sunday— They're booked and space is maxed out at 225 people. "We have so many reservations our banquet room will be full," Unit Manager Dave Winbigler said, noting that patrons will also be eating in the dining room. He hopes this—and the Readers' Choice poll win—are signs of an upward swing at Mulligan's, located inside the clubhouse of the University of Maryland Golf Course. He says he has noticed more foot traffic at the restaurant over the last two months, though he hasn't compared recent sales to past numbers, yet. "To be honest with you, I'm not sure where they're coming …

How far do you normally go to shop? PG has terrible shopping malls. The only thing PG really has on the horizon are the tanger outlets that will be built at the national harbor. But if you're going to drive that far, might as well go to a mall in Montgomery County.   more ›
