Five Things You Need to Know Today (The Hy-Five)

Important events and information for Wednesday, September 7, 2011.

1. First, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Andrew Metcalf, I've been working for Patch for about six months in Rhode Island and recently moved down to the D.C. area. I will be guest editing the site for Sarah Nemeth until Sunday.

2. Tonight is the first Republican presidential debate that will feature Texas Governor Rick Perry. Despite wildfires raging in Texas, he plans on debating. The Washington Post reports that Perry has surged past Mitt Romney and significantly diminished the prospects of Michele Bachmann.

3. The report on a survey of Hyattsville residents' satisfaction with a number of city services was released yesterday before the City Council Meeting. An article breaking down the report will run later this morning. More information can be found under Current Initiatives on the city's website.

4. Rain is expected to continue today. The National Weather Service, is reporting there could be a thunderstorm and that rain could be severe at times. They are predicting rainfall between a quarter and a half inch. Don't forget your umbrellas, high near 81 degrees.
