What is this Graffiti Trying to Say?

Simple tag provides ironic commentary on Gateway Arts District.

I was struck by this graffiti recently while walking along Rhode Island Avenue, and began to wonder about the meaning of its message.  It can only be seen when looking south, at the much-ballyhoo'ed, but still fairly inactivated mixed use retail center and storage facility in Brentwood. In a succinct and ironic way, it seems to question whether the arts really can be the driving force behind urban revival along Rhode Island Avenue. It's a question which one doesn't hear a lot in the Gateway Arts District.

More directly than any other forms of creative expression, grafitti has a unique ability to give visual context to the urban landscape. Whether it signifies a boundary of some sort, or a scribbled "I was here message", or–as I suspect the case is here–a comment directly on how an area is evolving.
