Morning, Hyattsville! Here's five things you need to know today about living in "A World Within Walking Distance."

 

1. This Saturday is the Mount Rainier Better Block Project including sidewalk cafes, vendor sales, facade improvements by local artists and live performances by Noelle Powers, Dancing by the Power Ministries, Lesole Dance Project, The Tamara Wellons Band and Timba Street Salsa Orchestra. The event will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on two blocks of 34th Street near GLUT.

2. Do you know who your City Council representative is? Hyattsville has five wards and two councilmembers from each one. Our mayor is and our city administrator is . is our city clerk and is chief of the Hyattsville Police Department. You can find their contact information on the city's website.

3.  The Hyattsville Office of Volunteer Services has ongoing opportunities for you to help clean up trash and debris from around the city. Cotton work gloves, safety guidelines, liter sticks and 80 percent post consumer recycled plastic bags will be provided if you want to lend a hand.

4. This year is Hyattsville's 125th birthday. There are a number of events planned to celebrate and you can keep up with the latest by visiting the city's anniversary website.

5. On Sunday St. Jerome's Church is hosting an Irish celebration to benefit St. Jerome Classical School. Head on over to the church's Gold Room for an evening of Irish music and step dancing. The suggested donation is $10. Food and games will be offered.
