Five Things You Need To Know Today (The Hy-Five)

About honoring a young life lost, supporting kidney research and a fat city grant.

We're halfway through the week, Hyattsville! Here's today's five things you need to know:

1. Hyattsville is the recipient of a grant through the Green Streets-Green Jobs Initiative, administered through the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Watershed Assistance Grant Program. The city will receive $25,000 to $35,000 as part of the effort to support local, grassroots-level greening efforts by towns and communities in urbanized watersheds and to reduce stormwater run-off through the creation of “green streets.”

2. On May 1, you are invited to The Mall at Prince Georges for the Ronald D. Paul Companies Kidney Walk hosted by the National Kidney Foundation Serving the National Capital Area. Registration begins at 2 p.m. and the walk kicks off at 3 p.m. The 5k Kidney Walk, which begins in the mall’s Center Court and continues through the surrounding neighborhood, is a pledge-based event designed to raise awareness and funds to support the foundation’s local programs and services.

3. Hyattsville Patch is recruiting residents to blog (or established local bloggers to link up with us) about our city. Well, really about anything. Patch wants to know what you have to say, in your own words, about anything. You can find more details here.

4. With the flurry of activity surrounding the May 3 elections, Patch doesn’t want you to forget an event at 8:15 a.m. on May 2 at Hyattsville Middle School. The PTA is hosting a tree planting memorial ceremony in honor of Hernandez was a student at Hyattsville Middle School. Her younger sister Kimberly also lost her life from the fire.
