Get Out: Eggs, Music and Sheep Shearing All In A Weekend

Here are the hottest things to do around Hyattsville this weekend.

Where/When: Ellsworth Dr. & Fenton St., Silver Spring, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today

Why Go: Downtown Silver Spring will host an about seed starting, rain gardens, recycling and more.

Where/When: College Park Aviation Museum, 1985 Corporal Frank Scott Dr., noon to 4 p.m. today

Why Go: OK, obviously every day is Paper Airplane Day, but on Friday you can test your paper-folding prowess by competing in the Paper Airplane Derby. Prizes will be awarded. 

Cost: Adults $4, Seniors $3, Children $2

 

3. Laurel Racetrack Fair

Where/When: Laurel, Md., 5 p.m. to midnight today, noon to midnight Saturday and Sunday.

Why Go: Special events and attractions include the Lance Gifford Illusion Show, Wolves of the World, Dog and Pony Show, a carnival midway, and games. Fireworks are scheduled on Saturday at 9:45 p.m.

Cost: $4 with 2-for-1 coupon available by clicking here ($8 without a coupon). Children ages 2 and under are free. Last ticket is sold one hour prior to closing.

 

4. "Dance" – Lucinda Childs

Where/When: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, 8 p.m. tonight

Why Go: Childs’s company performs her seminal 1979 work, imbued with new energy for the 21st century stage and set to music by Philip Glass. Live dancers are overlaid by ghost-like projected images of the fully restored Sol LeWitt film work.

Cost: $35 ($28 for subscribers)

 

5. The Great Magruder Park Egg Hunt & Pancake Breakfast

Where/When: Magruder Park, 9 a.m. to noon; breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday

Why Go: A fun-filled morning of pancakes with a visit by a V.I.B. - Very Important Bunny. Three egg hunts will take place, divided by age group. 
Cost: Breakfast: $5 per diner. Kids 2 and under eat free. The Great Magruder Park Egg Hunt is free, but reservations are requested.

 

6. Sheep Shearing Day at Old Maryland Farm

Where/When: 301 Watkins Park Dr., Upper Marlboro, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday

Why Go: This event will feature sheep and llama shearing demonstrations, displays of products made from wool and hair, and more. Hayrides will be available during the event. Pony rides will not be available on April 23.

Cost: Free; hayrides $1 per person.

 

7. Natural Egg Dying in Mount Rainier

Where/When: 4701 31st Pl., Mount Rainier Nature Center, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday

Why Go: Enjoy the folk art of natural egg dying—be sure to bring your own eggs! All ages are welcome!

Cost: $2 for children 3-16.

Where/When: Duvall Field, College Park Md., 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday

Why Go: After a hard day of saving the environment, enjoy the mellifluous melodies of Ryan Etherton and Weatherstar at a free concert. Food and refreshments will be available.

9. University Christian Church Easter Egg Hunt

Where/When: , 6800 Adelphi Rd., 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday

Why Go: For children age 3 to sixth-grade. During the Easter egg hunt and activities, the children will be grouped by ages.

Cost: Free

 

10. Sunday Bike Ride

Where/When: Arrow Bicycle, 5108 Baltimore Ave., 9 a.m. Sunday

Why Go: This Sunday ride is a 32-mile, moderately paced ride that emphasizes group riding techniques. Those new to group riding are welcome as riders regroup throughout the ride so that nobody is left behind.  Meet at the shop at 9 and the ride departs by 9:15. The ride is canceled when the roads are not safe to ride.
