Great Escape

Get away for a rib stickin' meal, homemade dessert and fresh farm air.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening. It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.

The other night someone mentioned Baugher’s to me and with its 100-year-old history, homemade ice cream and home style entrée selections, it sounded like somewhere a mom might like to visit.

And in Westminster, it’s just far away enough to actually make it an “escape” from life in the Washington, D.C. rat race.

About an hour away, Baugher’s bakery offers mouthwatering pies including butterscotch cream, blackberry, coconut cream, French apple and egg custard. The pie is homemade and you can buy it whole, by the slice or a la mode. The bakery also offers fruit breads, pastries, cakes and cookies.

Baugher’s also offers a fruit market from March through May in the springtime. You’ll find fall apples, spring flowers and plants, citrus fruits, frozen apple cider, homemade ice cream, crafts, jams and custom made fruit baskets.

The market also runs during other times of the year, offering different selections.

An orchard and farm opens on April 28 boasting homemade fudge, a petting zoo, wagon rides and a country craft corner. You can pick your own fruit here, but you need to call before you arrive. The hotline number is 410-857-0111.
