Then & Now

A snapshot of Hyattsville's past and what it has become. Patch will run this feature each week.

Washington, D.C., printer Harrison Bowen moved his family to a rented home on Cottage Square in 1867.

Bowen purchased land from the Bowie estate stretching from the Baltimore-Washington Turnpike to what is now 43rd Avenue at the north end of town.

This house was completed about 1868 for Bowen, his wife Mary Julia Prettyman and their three children Anna, Alice and Percy.

The property eventually included two other family homes. The house was sold to the Lustines and demolished by family request in 1978.
