Then & Now

Photos from Hyattsville's history

Lemuel Gray and his wife Katherine moved their young family to around 1900 and opened the Hyattsville Livery Stable at 48 Maryland Ave. (now Alternate U.S. Route 1 and Emerson Street).

The main building contained box stalls on the ground floor with a hayloft above. An adjoining section held carriages, buggies and hacks. Gray rented out horses and equipment, as well as boarded and stored for local residents.

About 1915, Gray sold to Hervey "Herb" Machen, who converted the property into the Hyattsville Auto Company. It was one of the earliest sales and service agents in the area for Mitchell and Ford motor companies, specializing in the Model T and later the Fordson farm tractor.
