Week In Review: Candidates, Parking and Burgers

Here's this week's roundup of news from Hyattsville Patch.

The week began with an article about the Prince George's County All Stars using their defensive pressure to key a fourth-quarter rally as they picked up a 66-64 victory over Montgomery County in the VOLiSports/FiOS 1 Girls All Star game at l in Upper Marlboro.

Patch also rolled out several profiles of candidates for the city’s municipal elections next month. This week we featured the three mayoral candidates—LaVonne Leslie, Chris Brophy and Marc Tartaro. We also ran profiles on Scott Matirne who is running for a Ward 1 spot. We put together a candidate guide and started a photo gallery of election signs.

Writer Karl Herchenroeder reported that the is requesting a 34 percent increase for parking enforcement

Chief Douglas Holland, who presented a budget summary to the City Council on March 28, said a big reason for the $53,737 increase is rising lease agreements at parking lots in the city, but he also said expenses associated with parking meter collection in 2011 may have been underestimated.

Hyattsville Patch did one final formal interview with outgoing Mayor William Gardiner and asked him about his time in office and Hyattsville's future.

On Friday, Laurel Patch editor Joshua Garner reported that the Maryland House of Delegates has cleared a controversial bill that would grant in-state tuition status to undocumented immigrants. The Maryland DREAM Act passed the House by a vote of 74-66 Friday. The bill now goes to the Senate, which passed its version last month.
