Whiz Kids

Here's a story about some local Whiz Kids, doing their best to bring smiles.

For the past 12 years, fifth- and sixth-graders from a Hyattsville school have been taking weekly strolls to sing along with residents at a nearby home for the elderly.

“We want our kids to understand what service is to others,” said , who accompanies the group of about 20 students on their Wednesday walks. “It’s also such a wonderful thing to see the smiles on the residents’ faces.”

This week, the students handed out hymnbooks and gift cards and joined the residents in singing songs for a half-hour. One resident, front row and center, gently swayed back and forth as she closed her eyes, singing while in her wheelchair.

Jackee Carter, activity coordinator at assisted living center, said throughout the week, the residents are in anticipation of the children’s visit.

“When they don’t come, [the residents] get disappointed, but they understand,” she said. “When the kids come, they talk about it up until Friday.”

A resident who identified herself as Mrs. Saunders said the best part is the children’s “self-direction” and ability to “contain themselves.”

“It’s always good seeing children grow,” she said.

The excitement is mutual.

“[The residents] are cheerful, and they sing along too,” said sixth-grader Brandon Lewis.

“Every Wednesday, we ask Dr. Falkner, ‘Are we going to Independence Court,’” said fifth-grader Ciara Haith.
