Historic Chillum Giant to Close in April

One of the area's oldest supermarkets will be shutting down after nearly six decades in business.

The Giant Food grocery store on Queens Chapel Road, one of the first modern supermarkets to open in the area, and one which can count Queen Elizabeth II as one of its customers, will be closing early next month.

According to a press release issued this evening from the Landover-based Giant Food, the store will be closing at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, 2013. The in-store pharmacy will be ceasing operations earlier, on Wednesday, March 27 at 6 p.m.

“After a thorough review of the operating performance of our stores, we made a very difficult decision to close the Queenstown location,” read a statement in a press release attributed to Anthony Hucker, president of Giant Food.  “We regret any inconvenience this will cause and encourage our Hyattsville customers to shop at our nearby store locations.”

The store was one of the first supermarkets in the area to open back in the mid 1950s, part of a rapidly expanding Giant grocery chain. Back in 1957, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip toured the Chillum store on her way to the White House after attending a football game at the University of Maryland.

The Queen payed interest to the shopping carts equipped with a child's seat, while Prince Phillip noshed on some cheese and crackers offered up by store's staff.

In all, the sovereign's visit to the supermarket lasted about 15 minutes and was "conducted with soup-to-nuts thoroughness" by the store's management, according to historic newspaper accounts.

"The supermarket, in its awesome majesty, is a growing symbol of American abundance," wrote one AP reporter covering the Queen's visit to the store. "It is growing so fast, in fact, that if many more of them are built there won't be any place for customers to live."

Now, the store looks worn at the edges. The aisle signs are in disrepair, and the facility is noticeably smaller than newer area grocery stores.

Grocery shoppers in West Hyattsville, Mount Rainier and Chillum, who have shopped at the Queens Chapel Giant for generations, will now have to find other grocery options.

The nearest comparable grocery store, a Shoppers Food Warehouse, is located in the shopping center directly behind the Giant. There's also an Aldi and a Bestway grocery store on Hamilton Street in Hyattsville. The nearest Giant grocery store is a little under two miles away, at the intersection of East-West Highway and Editors Park Drive.

A spokesperson for Giant Food was unable to provide additional comment beyond what was contained in the press release.

The grocery store is not the only long-time tennant to be lost from the Chillum Center. .

The question is what comes next? If I'm Shoppers, I'm jumping to the QC side, that's for sure. They would need to do some serious work to expand it, though as the space is a bit smaller. If not them, then who? I would guess a Tiger or some other international grocery store. Then there is always whole foods or MOM...hahahahaha! No wait, Trader Joe's! Ok, I'll stop joking now.
S Segal March 6, 2013 at 05:13 am
Yes we shop there. We'll miss it a lot (not that it was great, but it was close). We'll probably head to a "good" grocery store rather than go to Shoppers.

Councilor Bolin down in Mount Rainier, chatting with me via Twitter, says the next key for area residents, political leaders and business community is to impress upon Chillum Center management the importance of attracting a high quality grocer to the location.
He also pointed out the impact that this vacancy could have on the elderly residents of the assisted living complex to the east of Queens Chapel Road there.
Heather Ware March 6, 2013 at 05:47 am
When learning about this Giant closing, I thought of the elderly residents too but the Shoppers behind this Giant is more than a sufficient replacement. Shoppers has a much better bakery.
I will miss this Giant as it is close. I too desire a higher quality grocery store, would love if Trader Joe's would take a gamble on this area. Payless Shoe Source just closed in this strip mall as well as the long time jewelry store.

finding this out feels like a kick in the gut. honestly, however, because i was not satisfied with this store, for the past 8 years i have tended to do most of my shopping at the giant on washington blvd in arlington, va, near my work, and the greenbelt co-op, in greenbelt, where i find myself regularly. neither store is larger than QC giant, but selections are good and people really helpful. actually, the people at QC were helpful too, but i had one or two bad experiences with Rx, and thus stayed away after that. i tend to try to go to giant over safeway or other large grocers because giant is unionized.
i guess QC giant might have been gearing down provision of resources toward this store? it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy--giant gives less, the public is unhappy and stops coming, and then giant closes the store. i worry about a huge empty space being there for a while.

Maria Fusco on chilli um road at 19th Ave. I lived across the street from your parents home. I knew your brothers Paul & Michael. We have the same memories of the creek. I remember the MD. Department of Transportation widening the road and they took your home. Often thought of your family over the years. Ran into Mike about 12 years ago with the union.

I have come to the conclusion the reason why Giant is leaving. They have closed all their stores where they don't own the property. They buy land and build shopping centers with other tenants and have the Giant as the hub. More cost effective. Inside beltway almost impossible with land opportunities. Unless they buy an existing shopping center with expansion opportunities.

The old GEM store is now a U-Haul truck rental facility. Thanks for reminding me of it -- we shopped there when I was a kid, and I haven't thought about it for years.....

I always thought the parking lot was dangerous and the store below average. One time I had a person hit me up for money in the story. It’s a dump. How hard is it to run a store and keep it clean neat and orderly? When are they going to build the Safeway on 410 in front of 5 Guys? It would be nice to have a place to shop that is not run like a throwback suburban ghetto hood-mart. Like the other Giant on 410 that still uses just the one set of doors instead of both (which they have), such a pain getting in/out as hordes try to get in/out all using the same door.
Really people other areas are not like this. They run a low quality operation because it’s PG County. I see it as institutionalized racism.

I can remember when this store was practically brand new and my mother's favorite destination. Many Heidi Bakery birthday cakes came from the bakery as well as the Heidi coffee ice cream. I was enthralled by the live lobster tank and "fishing" for a dill pickle from the wooden barrel, sliding it into a waxed paper bag. The produce department was wonderful. I can remember a dear man with an Italian accent who would weight and mark each produce purchase. He always had something funny to say to every customer. I can't remember his name. Big times when the store expanded and became something of what today's WalMart is. My mother purchased a pretty lavendar dress for me there, appliqued with a cute cat on the apron. I wore it on my first day of school. And the Top Value Stamps... they had their redemption center store right next door. My mother got many treasures from that Top Value store. In fact, I'm looking at a Colonial style bed warmer right now, hanging from my fireplace in Virginia Beach. It became mine over 30 years ago and has made several Navy moves up and down the coast. Thanks for the memories ... and I know that the Hyattsville community will miss this place. I grew up in West Hyattsville, left in 1976 ... almost 40 years ago now.

Will those employees be offered other jobs? I hope so. I've had a feeling for some time this was happening. It started to go the way of the small Safeway -- little things that pointed to the company giving up on the store. And after community meetings and Safeway's promises to improve that store -- it closed. When that happened this Giant was the next easiest place for me to shop. But over the last few months I did notice things going down the same road as the Safeway. You could see the company was planning to let it go. Some of the staff I enjoy chatting with have mentioned that their hours were being changed/cut. I wish these companies would understand the value of keeping and investing in these smaller stores around for the communities they serve. I miss the Safeway as it met my needs -- and then I started to use this Giant. I hate the Giant on 410 for a variety of reasons. I do shop at YES a lot and really like how the store is managed, the staff is great, and the products are really good and I'm in and out in a very short time. But they don't carry some things that I need to get from a more traditional store. Their prices are obviously higher because they sell organic - but everything I have purchased has been worth it. My concern is not everyone in our area has "options" -- because of transportation, or mobility, time, energy, funds etc. etc. to go elsewhere easily. I feel bad for those families.

I shopped there, although I had my issues with it. They had NO Passover items, nothing Jewish at all, not even memorial candles, and once a few years ago, the manager told me "we don't serve Jews"... when I called HQ to complain they apologized and rectified the problem for a couple of years, until 2012, when again they had nothing, but at least they offered to get it from the East-West store and bring it to this one. Actually that's not the first time they volunteered to do that - there was something, pickles, I think, they stopped carrying, and when I asked they told me that they had it in other stores and how many did I want, they could bring them for me to this one if I wanted. I found the people, from the cashiers to the management, to be nice and really willing to go beyond. It didn't have everything and wasn't the greatest store, but it felt like the employees knew it and worked harder to make up for it.
Plus, it was my hometown store. I knew the people there, ran into neighbors there, and it was close. I could walk there. I loved when I lived overseas, that I would go to all the little food shops (butcher, bakery, vegetable, cheese, etc.) on my way home and knew everyone and bought what I needed, when I needed it - I get it on the walk home from the metro to my apartment.
Michael Theis (Editor) March 6, 2013 at 02:54 pm
I spoke with a store employee last night on condition of anonymity and he told me that the employees would be transferred to other locations.

Not sure what I'll do. I'm not a Shoppers fan, I've found their stores to be dirty, they sell so much junk and it's just too big. Maybe go to Giant at East-West, and shop more at Wegmans or Costco, and the Trader Joe's at the Foggy Bottom Metro near work. The Giant over by the RI Ave. Metro station is convenient - I'm at the Metro every day. I go to Glut, Bestway, Mom's and Yes but they don't fill all my grocery needs. I think there's a Safeway just over the line in DC near Fort Totten - interesting that the article didn't mention DC options - I might try that if they're open.
As far as low quality because we're in PG - this is an issue with a lot of stores, we have so few decent shops and restaurants and even supposed good ones are lower quality - have you seen the Macy's here versus the one at Metro Center? - but I'm not sure that's the case with this store. The one at East-West is much better quality. I think it's probably that the store needed a lot of updating and Giant didn't want to put the work into it since they don't own the property. I also wonder what is going on - article and comments mention but don't explore - with the strip mall owner and why there's so many shops closing and leaving. Heightened rent? Insurance, safety, upkeep issues? Why so many are leaving? I am concerned about the vacancies there, and also wondering if there is really another motivation behind it (get rid of tenants, sell the property to some developer for a lot of money).

Top Value Stamps!!! :D ~ I remember them too ~ Sometimes I got to put them in the book :) ~ N-I-C-E!
For my birthday (5th or 6th), my mother went to the Little Store and bought a package of Twinkies - also gone now, who'd believe - and she put a candle in it, and she and my brother sang me "Happy Birthday." ... nice memories, thanks.
TWoreti March 6, 2013 at 04:37 pm
If trader Joe's comes to this area, it could take away markets from shoppers and could out compete others. It is a loss for those who have been purchasing stuff from this Giant store.

Wow, I remember when the center was originally constructed. Prior to the center it was used for the Queenstown carnival. When Giant first opened we were one of it's first customers... Remember the old Queenstown deli and the bar that was next to it. I grew up in Queenstown apartments and went to St. James. Later, we moved to 30th Street in Mt. Rainier and shopped at the little DGS grocery store in the neighborhood. I certainly enjoyed the Giant and its products in the early days.... Nostalgia is a beautiful thing... Jim Ciotti

My mother Always spoke over the years about seeing the Queen there after the store had just opened!
Oh no really hate to see it go. I grew up at that store a lot of things come to mind. The Giant bread that was 3 for $1.00, the cheese rolls that u use to heat in the oven. The Carnival that be at the top of the parking lot. Lots of good times! Giant then had 1/2 of the store as liked said before a little dept. store selling all types of stuff. As the years have gone so has the store. Upkeep wasn't the best Liittle dirty with a smell. It will be missed by many!!!
Ed March 8, 2013 at 05:52 pm
Um, Safeway and Shoppers also are unionized. I hate to sound snarky, but if you are going to base your choice of stores on unionization, shouldn't you at least know which stores are unionized?
HyattsvilleCouldBeBetter March 8, 2013 at 11:19 pm
I couldn't agree more. I'm hoping they'll tear down the entire shopping center. There are no trees in that parking lot. It's a complete eyesore and it's embarrassing for people driving from DC to Hyattsville to have to see it. The West Hyattsville Transit District Development Plan has this shopping center targeted for redevelopment.

You can recommend new sites for a Trader Joes on Trader Joe's website. I have given them the address. I'd recommend others do it too if interested.

I live across from the QC Giant which is convenient for the many senior citizens. Many of the residents are in wheelchairs or walk with canes and shop at this giant because they can't get to the one at Riggs Plaza or on EW hwy. Aldis is to far for someone in a wheelchair or on a cane, as is the Safeway replacement on Hamilton st, Costco's out of the question. Many live here because of the location/convenience of the stores. I wonder if anyone considered the problems/effects closing giant is going to have on the area residents.
Juanita Perry March 9, 2013 at 11:06 pm
If theQC Giant is so historic, why doesn't corp. Giant make improvements that would attract more customers. An upgrade similar to Wegmans (to far to travel);a Starbucks; a deli with made to order sandwiches; better/brighter lights. Offer amenities like a small cafe where customers could sit down to eat or drink. Everyone can't get to PG mall or Wegmans and a store of this caliber in this neighborhood would increase sales.
Larry Brady March 11, 2013 at 07:20 pm
My parents got me a Gil Hodges first baseman's mitt with Top Value Stamps (I think). Where was the S&H Green Stamp redemption center? I thought it was near the Giant, too. We're talking the mid-1950s here ...
RK Tillman March 14, 2013 at 12:53 pm
My husband and I live within walking distance of the QC Giant and it's just a couple min to run over in our car if we have to haul a bunch of groceries back. We've always joked about how you have to check to make sure your food isn't expired, etc., but we'd hoped that Giant would upgrade it someday instead of just dumping it. I'm even more worried about our neighbors who don't have cars, though.
We'll probably start using the one up on Eastern or the one over on E-W. They're about equidistant for us and both are nicer. We'd periodically have to make runs there anyway when the QC Giant wasn't up to par in its food or if it just didn't have what we needed.
Boobie March 20, 2013 at 05:24 pm
Wow! So, now what?! They'll put up a Latino market that does not carry turkey products! What is the U.S. coming to?! I mean seriously. Can we put up a Safeway, Shopper's, or Giant in a Latin country?! Ughhh...I think NOT! Maybe a McDonald's!

I grew up in the Avondale neighborhood of West Hyattsville in the 80s/90s, Russell Ave to be exact. I left MD for college in 1999 & haven't lived in the area since. When I go back home to visit, I see the deterioration of the QC Giant. However, there used to be alot of citizens who were adults in my adolescence from the NE DC neighborhoods right across Eastern Ave (North Michigan Park, Woodridge, Ft Lincoln, etc.) that used that location b/c of the convenience & a preference of Giant to Safeway. I feel sorry for them as they're elderly now & are forced to visit the PG Plaza or Rhode Island Ave locations to perpetuate their preferences. At one time, the wooded area extending from the backyards of the Russell Ave single family homes to the Giant (or maybe it was just to the Avondale Park Apts) was identified as a potential location for new townhouse developments. This was in the late 90s/early 2000s. For those of you that still live in Hyattsville, obviously that never happened. However, w/ the QC Shopping Center now slated for redevelopment, I wonder if that plan is going to resurface.

I'm sad to see it go because it was so much a part of my life. This was my dad's favorite stop every day. All the clerks knew him and he was an expected part of the day for a few minutes every day. It was also like a weekly home coming on Friday evenings and most weekends. I always saw my McKinley Tech former classmates shopping to prepare for the weekend. It was a pleasure to see so many familiar faces in the neighborhood. I am really sorry to see it go.
dogmama April 22, 2013 at 03:26 pm
Other than miscellaneous things at Glut and Bestway, I haven't been to the grocery store in almost a month. Going to PG Plaza with the lights and traffic feels like an expedition, as does Riggs Plaza. This was the first time in years that I needed gas and didn't have Giant points to take money off at Shell!
