MetroAccess Increasing Fares This Month

New MetroAccess fares will be double as of Feb. 27.

The new fares are part of Metro’s overall fare adjustments approved last June for this fiscal year. The new fare is calculated based on the distance and time of day for travel and that MetroAccess fare will cost twice the amount of what the fare would cost for Metrobus or Metrorail service, but will not exceed $7.

The trips currently cost a base fare of $3 for one way. All grandfathered trips outside the Americans With Disabilities Act service area will be charged a supplemental fare, up to the maximum $7.

About 30,000 disabled Washington, D.C. metro-area residents will be affected by this change, according to the Washington Post.

According to Metro, customers will be informed of changes through a newsletter, customer guide, automated calls and through the MetroAccess reservations agent when they book a trip on the phone or online. One way customers can determine how much a trip will cost them is by logging on to Metro’s Trip Planner, filling out the form and then doubling the fare of the first itinerary generated.

MetroAccess is no longer accepting tokens or fare cards as payment as of Feb. 1, but riders can exchange unopened token packages or MetroAccess fare cards for EZ-Pay credit on Feb. 9, 10, 16 and 17 at the Metro Center Sales office on 12th and F Street NW or the Metro Headquarters Sales office on 600 Fifth Street NW.
