Lanes to Close for Balt. Ave & East-West Highway Improvements

State Highway Administration working to improve frequently jammed intersection.

Motorists traveling through the intersection of Route 1 and East West Highway may encounter some road-work related delays over the next few months as the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) works on a $900,000 project to improve the intersection.

The SHA will be constructing a new left turn lane on northbound Baltimore Avenue to help increase the number of cars which can move through the intersection. Currently, drivers waiting to turn left at Baltimore Avenue and East West Highway during rush hour often cause backups which can extend for blocks.

SHA crews will also be replacing curbs and gutters along southbound Baltimore Avenue, upgrade curb ramps and sidewalks to be compliant with the American Disabilities Act, drainage improvements, and moving the traffic signals to math up with the new left turn lane, according to an announcement from the SHA.

The construction means that the SHA may close lanes on East West Highway between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and on Baltimore Avenue between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight, Sunday through Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Work has already begun on the project. Weather permitting, according to the SHA, the project should be done by the fall.
