Royal Baby: It's a Boy for the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William

Kate Middleton gave birth to a baby boy weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces.

UPDATE, 4:03 p.m.: Prince William and his wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, welcomed the third royal in line for the British throne, a baby boy, earlier today.

The 8-pound, 6-ounce royal heir was born at 4:24 p.m. London time.

Original Post, 11:49 a.m.: There were 800,000 babies born in the United Kingdom in 2011, according to the Office for National Statistics. But Monday morning, much of the world was focused on just one (or two, or three who knows?)

That means about 2,200 babies –give or take - are expected Monday. But there’s only one expecting mother whose labor progress you could follow live on CNN.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, (you may know her as Kate Middleton), went into labor Monday morning. Prince William’s wife will give birth to a child who might possibly inherit the Royal Throne. And that, for many was reason to camp outside St. Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London awaiting a first glimpse of the babe, UPI reports.

But devotion to this royal baby has gone further – expectant mothers are reportedly waiting to name their baby, in hopes of sharing a homonymous taste of royalty.

The royal family has not announced the baby's name yet.

And what might that name be? Thankfully, the Daily Mail has done its research, surveying bookmakers (i.e. British bookies) to see what names people are putting their money on.  George and Alexandra are at the top of the list, but Michael and Francis and James are also getting some attention.

Betting on royal names is big money – bookmakers say about  £1 million has been shelled out so far.

What do you think? Are you following the trans-Atlantic labor watch, waiting to name your baby? Or is your attention focused on something more close to home?
