Tornado Watch in Effect Until 9 p.m.

Strong winds and heavy rain to begin around 4 p.m.

UPDATE, 2:09 p.m.:

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Hyattsville and the surrounding communites until 9 p.m Friday.

Heavy hail, tornado gusts and heavy wind are possible, according to a NOAA alert.

Severe thunderstorms may disrupt your evening commute, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms are set to begin around 3 p.m., and intensify by 7 p.m.  Winds may reach 20 mph.

The warning affects most Mid-Atlantic states, including Maryland and most of Virginia.  Residents are advised to drive safely and stay indoors.

Today’s severe storms coincide with the official start of hurricane season, which ends in November.
