Community Corner

College Park Day 2012

Join your friends, neighbors and the whole College Park Community at the 3rd Annual College Park Day event on Saturday, October 27, 2012 - at the College Park Community Center!

Hop on one of the two free shuttles to the event: Free parking and shuttle at the College Park/UMD metro station on Paint Branch Parkway; or the free shuttle from the University of Maryland Stamp Student Union and come on over for great food, good music, and fun for the whole family!

The event is happening at lunchtime so come hungry and grab some great grub! Our terrific food vendors will feature savory delights from around the globe, and last year’s fan favorite Curbside Cupcakes will bring cupcake bliss to all of your sweet senses! Our food area will also feature award winning BBQHot Dogs for the kids and other delights, so bring your appetite!

On stage we’ll have a variety of entertainment for the eyes and ears! Local bands, a cappella groups, dance troupes, and martial artists will entertain you all afternoon!

Be sure to stop by and visit with over 70 community and College Park business exhibitor booths and get information on what they do, how you can get involved, or simply pick up some unique items by local artists or perhaps enter a raffle drawing for a fantastic and wonderful prize!

Bring the kids! We have lots of ways to keep the little ones entertained during the day! If they are fans of Harry Potter, they’ll enjoy the Quidditch Exhibition on the grassy pitch by the Maryland Flying Wizard Turtles, or maybe they are a budding tennis superstar that want’s to try their forehand at the mobile tennis court sponsored by the Tennis Center at College Park. Since the event is 4 days before Halloween, have them come dressed up in the scariest or sweetest costume and enter the costume contest for some fun prizes. Some of our exhibitors will have wrapped candy to hand out to the early trick or treat-ers for a safe trick or treating experience. And if all that isn’t enough to keep them busy, we have a kid zone complete with giant inflatable castle and slides for them to play on along with a few carnival games.

Say hello to our first responders who keep us and our families safe. We’ll have officers from the Maryland State Police, Prince George’s County and the University of Maryland units; College Park, Branchville, and Prince George’s County Firefighters; and the Bomb Squad doing demonstrations on their unique equipment. Come by and see some really cool stuff!

With elections coming up in early November, bring your Maryland ID and vote early – as the College Park Community Center is hosting early voting!

Cheer on your favorite local artist when we announce the winners of the elementary school poster contest for College Park schoolchildren. One lucky finalist in each category – Grades 1 – 3, and Grades 4 – 6 will win a grand prize college scholarship savings plan from the local Capital One Bank branch on Baltimore Avenue!

Parking restrictions will be lifted in the Lakeland Neighborhood during College Park Day, however we encourage everyone to utilize the 2 free shuttle services described above.
