Community Corner

Free Eco-gardening Event! Three Sisters Gardens for All seasons!

The Chesapeake

Education Arts & Research Society
(CHEARS), in partnership with Alight

Dance Theater, is proud to announce the second performance of Three Sisters

Gardens for All Seasons, a series of site-specific performances and

lecture-demonstrations, which will be taking place at the Three Sisters

Demonstration Garden just outside of the Greenbelt Community Center on Sunday,

June 1st from 2pm-4pm during Greenbelt’s Artful Afternoon.

The Three Sisters Demonstration Gardens and Food

Forest is a project of CHEARS that demonstrates organic and bay-friendly

growing practices, healthy food options, and eco-arts through educational

workshops, plantings, and meetups.  A

food forest engages local residents to expand the urban tree canopy, improve

local water and soil quality, and mitigate environmental problems related to

stormwater runoff and other pollution through managing an “edible” landscape

that benefits wildlife and people.

Alight

Dance Theater
, founded by Angela Foster, blends dance, physical theater,

& spoken word to speak truthfully about the habits of the human heart

through movement, embracing the brokenness and celebrating the pursuit for

wholeness in a fragmented world.

There will be four 20-minute dance performances in

the garden itself, accompanied by music and the sweet fragrance of fresh herbs

and flowers.  You’ll want to bring kids

along too, because in between performances we will have an interactive

watershed model where you can learn about ways you can improve water quality in

our local rivers and streams by pouring “rain” over a diorama of a typical

Maryland landscape.  This watershed land

use model is even fun for adults!

The performance will take place in the garden

located outside in the back of the community center next to the adult day care

center.

This free event is supported by Toyota

TogetherGreen, an Audubon program with funding from Toyota.  No registration required.
