Hyattsville 2.0 v2
A review of Hyattsville on the web for the work week ending Friday, May 6.
You came back! Thanks! There was a lot of action flying through the web this past week. Let’s take a peek.
- If you are on the HOPE List Serve, then chances are you saw the traffic around this video posted by St. Jeromes on YouTube. There was some fun (like it’s fun going to the dentist) back and forth and some thoughtful commentary. The video was supposed to be a spoof off of a Chrysler Super Bowl ad and while it reached to be a parody, many felt it missed the mark. Several people did not see a problem with it and the creator espoused the marketing behind it. Others (admittedly including yours truly) did not see it that way and thought that it simply perpetuated the negative stereotype surrounding Hyattsville. If you have not done so, take a look and see what you think.
- There was an election in Hyattsville! While waiting for the results, I was flipping from our City Cable Channel (Channel 71 on Comcast and 12 on Verizon - can’t wait to see if the City Cable access will finally expand and become just a bit more interesting. ), to the City Website, to the Hyattsville Facebook page and to the HyattsvillePatch (you don’t expect a hyperlink to the Patch, do you?) and finally saw the results (over two hours later!) when someone posted something on Twitter. There were 901 () votes cast for Mayor out of a City with a population of over 17,000 – a little over 5%. Congrats to all the victors!
- In the lost dog/found dog category, there were three reported this past week.
- Bart Lawrence gave me a gentle reminder to remind all of the Native Plant Sale on May 14, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday May 15, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hyattsville Elementary School.

- On the City Facebook site it was posted that $35,000 of the recently announced EPA funding is coming to Hyattsville. It will go towards constructing bioretention gardens and tree pits to better manage stormwater runoff in the University Hills neighborhood, as part of next year's planned street improvements. Don’t see the importance of that? Check out the Anacostia Report Card. Spoiler alert – WE FAIL!
- On the HPA Hyattsville page there was notice that tickets are still available for the Historic House Tour on May 15 – you can get them at Franklins. They even created their own Facebook page.

- A quick search of #Hyattsville does not bring up a lot, other than this little story about 30 KILOS OF COCOAINE found in a Hyattsville storage unit. What is not mentioned in any of the articles is the name of the storage unit facility…was it really in Hyattsville or in the Hyattsville zip code? Just wondering.

- Over on YouTube this week, there are some videos of trains going through Hyattsville. Apparently, there are people who just love to video trains.
- Also, you can watch Hyattsville Middle School (what do these people know about quality education) annihilate John Hanson Middle School in the Science Bowl...in case you missed it on TV.
Lastly, if you have not seen it, check out this Recycling Website I created that is specific to Hyattsville. Go through it with your kids, share it with friends and neighbors!
