Hyattsville 2.0 v.3

Version 3 of Hyattsville 2.0 - covers from last week until May 13.

The third installment!  How time flies.  Just so you know, if you are reading this that means you are familiar with the Hyattsville Patch site already so I don’t have that on my list, although I will occasionally mention or link to an article or page there.  Also, if I miss an event or something you think is newsworthy, just pop it into the comments section.  Until next week!

HOPE list serve

  1. The Hyattsville Life & Times is mailed out to everyone, but did you know you can view current and past issues on-line?  It’s a weird site in how it displays, but it works great.  You can view other magazines and periodicals there as well if you want to explore.
  2. Reminders were posted about the Native Plant Sale on May 14, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday May 15, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hyattsville Elementary School.
  3. There was some serious slapping going on!  It stated with the revelation that Living Social DC area family edition deals don’t include Prince Georges’ County (or PG County as some of you like to call it).  Their reasoning, according to another post, was because not enough business/merchants are working with them or signed up.  As pointed out by another post, it needs be a two way street where Living Social also needs to step up to the plate.  What followed was a barrage of over 20 posts supporting our county.  I love to see this and think of the possibilities if all residents were as vigilant!  It’s really nice to see community pride!
  4. As usual there were several “I’m looking for a” posts.  The HyattsvilleWiki has a page dedicated to this very thing that is easily updated by anyone.  It’s under “Quick Links” and is called Services.  Instructions are on the page on how to add your own and, if you want, to edit.  The idea behind the HyattsvilleWiki was that any resident could update the information, add information, correct errors and even start their own pages.  Contact me directly if you are interested and are having issues getting on there to do it.  It’s a “Google Sites” platform.  If you have not explored the site, you should check it out.  Also, by going directly to the HOPE List Serve site you can search past messages.
  5. On Thursday, a report came from the DOJ that said a major gang leader was from Hyattsville.  Well, the county and the city quickly replied saying – oh, no you didn’t!   A by Patch Editor Sarah Nemeth.

I think there is a theme going on here.  If you are going to bash Hyattsville or Prince Georges County, you better have your facts straight because many of us are sick and tired of it and we will call you out!

  1. What’s up with the helicopters?  Reports that one or two helicopters were buzzing around Hyattsville the other night with their spot lights on.  I’m used to hearing the sound as Hyattsville air space seems to be the route to get to the hospital.  I agree that it would be nice to have some kind of follow up from the Police Department just to soothe curiosity.

Facebook –

  1. The first Summer Jam is tonight (May 13), rain or shine!  I don’t make it over there enough, but it is really fun to hang with neighbors, have a drink and listen to some great live music.  Will Mandy the Clown be there?   Yup!  New this year to the line-up is refillable mugs!  Cost’s $6 bucks but 50 cents off with each beer.  That means it’ll pay for itself after your 12th beer (note, the savings can be spread over the entire summer…if you prefer.)
  2. The city has a new “Call-A-Bus” vehicle that made its maiden voyage.  Another excellent service the city offers for seniors.  More details about it here.
  3. Bike to Work day is May 2oth and again Magruder Park will be a “pit stop” location.  There will be group leaving there around 7:00am to make it downtown in time for the festivities.  Make sure you register with WABA even if you are just riding in on your own.
  4. Found this article on Hyattsville (1/13/2011) on the “Arts District Hyattsville” group page.

  1. Patch and others are reporting that Busboys and Poets, as well as Yes! Organic Market are going to open a little later than they expected.  We are all anxiously waiting!  BB&P next month, Chipotle May 17th!
  2. New York Times article..wait, what?  Yes, a New York Times article on the music program at DeMatha.  If you had a son who was going there to play an instrument, you would be pretty darn happy (I’m pretty darn happy FYI).
  3. Some nice photos of the tweeted by Mr. Suspect. (also put up on the Patch)

YouTube –

  1.  A new video on the Westboro Baptist Church idiots at Northwestern HS and the counter protest.  I’m thinking it was a project by a student.  Either way, nice little piece.

FourSquare –

  1. Wait, what?  FourSquare?  For those who don’t know about FourSquare, it’s a mobile app thingy where you “check in” where you are at any given time.  What is the general societal use?  Well, not a lot.  The idea is that your friends can see where you are and come visit you or read your reviews/tips (e.g. “be sure to ask for the special sauce”) at a location.  The reason I bring this up is there is this guy, “Dan. R” from Elkridge, MD seems to be holding this huge grudge against Hyattsville.  He puts nasty comments on pretty much every Hyattsville destination.  I’m guessing he was either denied financing for an EYA home or got a parking ticket he was angry about.
