Hyattsville 2.0 v.4

v.4 covers May 14 to May 21, 2011. I run down "The Google", foxes, squirrels, dogs, vlogs and more! Check it out!

If you want to get the real “3-D” experience of this blog, remember to click on the links (that would be the words with the underline in blue). The links will usually take you to a website with more information about what I’m writing about or sometimes to a photo or video that pertains in some way to the subject. I do like “The Google” when the tubes are too filled up.

Remember, if I miss an event or something you think is newsworthy, just pop it into the comments section. Until next week!

HOPE list

Find out what's happening in Hyattsvillewith free, real-time updates from Patch.

  1. A little rivalry between Hyattsville and Mt. Rainier to be settled on the softball field (where/when? Don’t’ know yet). Contact Rick Ruggles if you want to get in the Anacostia League or are interested in playing a game between Hyattsville/Mt. Rainier.
  2. A few emails on some foxes that were seen over by the WSSC building. I went to look and saw these two guys hanging out who said “me and my brother heard there were foxes here” (reference at 1:12 into the video).
  3. Some “thank you” emails went around about the Native Plant Sale as well as the Historic Hyattsville House Tour. Both were HUGE successes with both events selling out way before they thought they would. Good job Hyattsville!
  4. District 2 Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, June 2, 2011. This meeting will be held at Northwestern High School’s cafeteria (on the lower level), located at 7000 Adelphi Road in Hyattsville, MD. The meeting will start promptly 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
  5. The biggest thread this week was about those pesky squirrels and their attacks on a garden. Some good advice was offered, but the best was not advice but a great Squirrel Feeder Obstacle Course video.  You have to check it out!
  6. Lost Dog Posts – Just one this week which I posted for my neighbor. The dog returned on its own not a minute after I posted which obviously means that the dog is a member of the HOPE list serve.

Facebook

  1. Big Green Truck Day goes from 10 to 1pm at Magruder Park.  Kids can get up close to everything from a street sweeper to a police cruiser at this special Touch-a-Truck event. There's even a helicopter landing at noon! Free and open to the public.
  2. The city was kind enough to send out my updated for Hyattsville version of “Is it Recyclable In Hyattsville” educational website.  I made this one specific to Hyattsville rather than all of Prince Georges County.
  3. There was a posting about the trash outside Elevation Burger and Yogi-Castle. I forwarded that to the city and they contacted the management group over at “Mount EYA” (that may be the biggest hill in Hyattsville!) who will be taking care of getting more garbage cans and getting them picked up more often. If you see areas where trash is bad, be sure to give a call over the city and let them know!

Twitter

Remember that when you tweet about Hyattsville, start it off with “#Hyattsville” so that it can be searched!

  1. A tweet from the Sarah Nemeth about . Service dogs are great!
  2. Another tweet from Sarah went out about free Chipotle the day before the official opening. This sent hordes of Hyattsvillagers running to EYA to get food!

YouTube

  1.  A nice compilation from the Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department.  The search I did said it was uploaded this week, but the video itself was put together back in January.  Still, pretty cool.
  2. Check out Northwestern High School Concert Choir doing "The Lark" arr. Felix Mendelssohn
  3. Francis Abbey, who lives in Hyattsville, is, according to his bio, a filmmaker, actor and vlogger (video blogger). Not many of his “vlogs” are about Hyattsville itself, but this one talks about John Mitchell’s final concert he conducted.  Nice clips from the band.

The Google

  1. A quick search on “The Google” for Hyattsville brought up the “April 1886” site that shows old photos with written history about Hyattsville.  In celebration of Big Green Truck Day, they pulled some old photos of the city vehicles from way back when.

Upcoming Events!

May 21 – Big Green Truck Day – Magruder Park – 10am to 1pm.

May 21/May 22 – Hyattsville Middle School production of Annie – May 21 at 7pm and May 22 at 3pm.  Tickets $5 at door (cash only).
