Hyattsville 2.0 v5

Check out this week's blog where we talk about viral videos, where to find stuff, safety tips and energy efficiency, all in the context of Hyattsville!

Happy Memorial Day!

Wait, is that the right way to say that? Really not a lot “happy” about honoring soldiers who died for our country. I mean, I’m not “not-happy,” I’m just thinking there may be a better way to express Memorial Day. “Remember Memorial Day,” “Respect Memorial Day”? Anyhow, let me know what you think down in the comments area.

I can’t wait to dip my feet in the nice PGPool water, relax with friends and family and kick-start the summertime frame of mind.

YouTube: The searches for Hyattsville are mostly made up of apartments/houses for rent/to own. While this is good marketing, I just HATE it. They are basically advertisements that should be removed. However, the last video in the search revealed this gem from a young man in Hyattsville!  I didn’t have the sound on but had other music in the background which synced up pretty nice and would think it would for any upbeat song. Can you say viral?

Facebook:  Artdistrct Hyattsville’s page had a post about some street parking issues over at the EYA area. Check out their petition--seems reasonable to me. Once everything opens up there is going to be a lot congestion over there so better figure it out now while you can.

The City of Hyattsville Page page mentioned that they are showing the original Muppet Movie at Magruder Park this summer. For those who did not know, Jim Henson lived nearby and attended Northwestern High School. There was hint there about more Muppet related news, but we will have to wait and see if there is a news flash on that.

Twitter: Remember that when you tweet about Hyattsville, start it off with “#Hyattsville” so that it can be searched!

What’s better than going to the City of Hyattsville council meetings? Just about anything I would guess. But one thing is following along on Twitter. A fun exchange by can be had by using #HyattsvilleCityCouncil when you post or to see what is happening. The Patch goes to  all the meetings and they Tweet the events which is a great service in and of itself. The fun comes making snide remarks about the meeting in 140 characters or less!

HyattsvilleWiki -- With Summertime comes vacation. Before you leave your home, check out the safety tips on the Wiki  (add your own as well).

HOPE Listserv -- It was the “anyone know where I can find a ...” week! We usually have a couple of these queries on the HOPE list but this week there seemed to be more than usual. People were looking for the following: car body shop, poison ivy removal, window AC, gentle hair braider, bathtub refinisher, car window tinter, weight lifting partner and lawn mower blade sharpener. That is one of the cool things about the HOPE list serve ... not only can you ask, but someone knows the answer.  That’s community.

The Google -- Man, it’s getting hot already. In the 90s already and dang if that to me already!  (“Not until June first” I keep saying back!) PEPCO has a nice offer that allows you to get $100 back on any central air tune-up. Energy efficiency is not only a good thing, but maybe the most important thing!

Upcoming Events!

June 4 -- 9:30 a.m. Dogs for the Arts - Magruder Park. Bring your favorite furry friend for a morning with your fellow dog lovers. Contests include paw painting, best costumes, dog/owner look alike, and talent.
June 4Anacostia Heritage Bike Ride  --  Three different rides depending on your level of riding.
June 10 -- Outback Steakhouse Summer Jam! Superflydisco returns to shake, shake, shake their groove thing. Don’t forget your Summer Jam Mug!
