Hyattsville 2.0 v.7

The blog returns with a run down of Hyattsville cyberspace activity over the last couple of weeks!

Did you miss me?  Sorry for the delay between blogs! I was on a little vacation to Greece which was great! Whole family went and it was a really educational lesson for them. Where else could have we gone to throw stones at police and get a nice whiff of tear gas? Kids will have some great “what I did this summer” essays when school starts again!

Working from most recent to latest:

  1. Cool Rain Garden and Storm water Management Project on July 20th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Takoma Park put on by the Takoma Horticultural Club.  Looks interesting and maybe can be some good ideas for Hyattsville.
  2. Chipotle was on the mind of folks who were concerned about the cleanliness of the store. What we learned was this: While always fun to get other opinion on the matter, make sure you actually do something about it by contacting the owner or management company. If they know we are watching, they will clean up their act. Second, Chipotle is no longer owned by McDonalds…did not know that. Third, there are some real die hard Chipotle fans! (reference website in link above. Really, you need to log-in to be a Chipotle Fan?)  Anyhow, for those who are interested in numbers, there were 49 Chipotle related messages!
  1. Another big discussion was how to remove ivy and bamboo. Some good discussion and ideas. While I don’t have a lot of experience with ivy, I do with bamboo. It’s next to impossible. Don’t ever, ever, ever grow it in your yard!  The stuff grows really fast and spreads quickly. Taking it out entails digging up the entire yard and then waiting a year for the roots you missed to grow back and then digging up your yard again. Repeat as needed. There is one other method.
  2. New Windows – Some good information about new windows. Have your old windows fixed or get new ones? I started a page for windows on the HyattsvilleWiki here that is a good starting point. I linked to the message stream on the Wiki page.

  1. On the Arts District Hyattsville Facebook page there was a link posted for an article on The Artdc Gallery which is part of the “Lustine Showroom” building.  Good write up!
  2. The 4th Annual Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival has been announced for September 24, 2011!
  3. With Busboys and Poets getting ready to open their doors within a month, Yes! Market right behind them, this was a great find…
  4. Blood drive is back! The city has decided to move their business from the Red Cross to Children’s Hospital (click here to make an appointment). They gave me a thank you but all I did was tell them that I heard good things about their blood donation bus and that they were very professional. They are coming to Magruder Park on July 3oth and in the future, the suggestion was made to park the bus on Jefferson near the new development. Give blood get a coupon for a discounted burger and yogurt? That sounds like a plan!

YouTube

  1. Well, apparently I missed some big excitement while away. As seen on this video, there were two, count them, two, New Haven F7s speeding through Hyattsville’s RR tracks. Wow, such excitement and thankfully caught on video for proof!
  2. Talk about Hyattsville excitement on YouTube, check out this incredible video about the vintage Otis elevator at Macy’s at the Mall at Prince Georges. Just try not getting excited about this!
  3. Kids dancing at Hyattsville Middle School – some good moves, just trying to figure out if that was at the “up” stairwell or “down” stairwell.
  4. More Hyattsville Middle School – check out the award winning Chorus.
  5. All the firework hoopla we have been hearing about got me to thinking about my favorite fireworks video. This was an unintentional fireworks display! Not the greatest quality footage, but just amazing. Watch to the end!
  6. West Hyattsville Farmers Market – Open for business on Tuesdays!

Google

  1. Alas, goodbye to Reds. Let’s hope there is someone out there willing to take it over. Thanks Chris for a great run!
  2. Read my lips, no new taxes!
  3. I suppose I could link to the bad news about the UTC events last night, but I prefer not to.
  4. Putting some faith back in mankind, it’s good to know that someone wasn’t illegally dumping oil!
