Summer and Motivation (or lack thereof!)

Ah, summertime. It’s a time when you go on vacation, physically and mentally, as all the important things that you have to do, and deadlines to meet, seem to pass by so fast. And then one day you find, ten years has got behind you. Next thing you know the kids are back in school, the pool’s closed, leaves start falling and another season is upon us.

HOPE Listserve: 

• Oh my, quite the exchange on the HOPE Listserve about race relations. I’ve always thought that a sociologist would have a great time examining the HOPE Listserve during exchanges like this. The good news out of all of this is that the discussion will continue in the form of a “Building Cultural Gaps Book Club”.

• I like seeing posts on the Listserve like this one -- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HOPE_in_Hyattsville/message/25097. I mean, where else would you see someone asking for a broken bowling ball. I want to see the end product.  It also worries me because they can be dangerous in the wrong hands, and you know kids these days.

• Good news from EYA as Big Bad Woof will open’s August 8. Tara Thai put up their sign, even though no date for opening has announced. Yes! Organic Market looks like it’s going to open pretty soon as well and they just had a hiring fair. Busboys and Poets is of course open and we are anxiously awaiting their “Grand Opening” (which has not happened yet!) which will hopefully come along with a spot on the website for the Hyattsville location (hint, hint).

• Some talk on the Arts District Hyattsville website that the EYA pool may be open by next summer. http://www.hyattsville.org/DocumentView.aspx?DID=126. Based on PGPool’s membership almost doubling this past year, they may want to consider making it a bit bigger.

• The City of Hyattsville hosted the Children’s Hospital Blood Mobile last week.  This was the first time the city has used them and things went ok, but we really need to fill all of those slots. Maybe Saturday morning in Magruder may not have been the best time/place, but maybe it was and we just need to get the word out better. I’m kind of hoping for having it parked between Bus Boys and Elevation with maybe some special consideration for those who give blood.

• Yup, Busboys and Poets has opened!  Here is “professional” video about the opening.
• Ah, now this is nice. “Beercandave” started posting some of the live music going on down at the Surf Club Live. Keep it up!
• Dang, house fire on 43rd a couple weeks ago. Here is some footage from our very own “Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department.”
• Oh my gosh!!!!  A CSX Rock Runner! Can you believe it! Oh, thank goodness someone posted it on YouTube! What would have we done! I’m glad you can’t see me now, because I think I’m crying I’m so happy!
