Hyattsville 2.0 v.9

A brief recap of the past month.

In case you didn’t notice, September was a really dreary, wet month.  Did you know it was the fifth wettest September on record?  That’s certainly good for our trees and gardens, but not much else!  Speaking of trees and rain…

  1.  Re-Forest Hyattsville activities are taking place!  The first mention on HOPE was a discussion about the City Council Meeting in late September where DPW director Patrick Ryan presented a tree replanting budget that the was a bit ($18,396) over what was budgeted for trees.  The end result is that the City will plant about 40 trees.
  2. Never fear, though, because if you did not/will not get a City planted tree, you can purchase your own for VERY cheap.  John Wright posted an email to the HOPE list where you purchase one of five varieties of trees for only $35 - $45 which includes delivery, planting and a “gator bag” which helps with watering.  These trees CANNOT be planted on the public right-of-way (between your sidewalk and the curb) so make sure you have a good spot in your yard.  If you are looking for a tree, this is the place to go.  You can contact John directly at johnlwright61(at)gmail(dot)com.
  3. With all that rain in September, you probably forget just how dry it was around here in July and August.  If only there was a way to collect the rainwater for use elsewhere?  Oh, but there is!  HOPE and HECYES have teamed up with the Anacostia Watershed Society to offer some really nice rain barrels.  There will be a “seminar” on October 15th at 2pm the City of Hyattsville Municipal building that will show how to install a rain barrel.  HOPE has purchased (from our vast coiffeurs) a rain barrel for the City which will be installed on Oct. 15.  This is open to all regardless if you have purchased a rain barrel or not.  As of right now there are two (2) rain barrels remaining for sale.  Check out the message here for details if you want one!
  4. The HOPE list serve is up to 761 folks and September had the most messages posted EVER IN THE HISTORY of the HOPE list serve, tallying 664 messages.  Phew, glad I’m not the moderator!  Oh, wait, I am.  Dang.
  5. Things get spooky for Halloween as the annual GoatMan Hollow starts this weekend!  The proceeds go in part of benefit the Riverdale Park Fire Department.  There are bunches of kids (and adults) who live in Hyattsville and surrounding neighborhoods who put on this show.  It’s being held at the old 94th Aero Squadron Restaurant across from Wells Ice Rink.  More details on the GoatMan Hollow website including the history, the legend, times, dates and more.

  1.  Have I mentioned how much I enjoy the discussions on the Arts District Hyattsville Facebook page?  Always a good source and interesting to see what the newer Hyattsville residents are talking about.  They really have their own little community brewing over there which is just great.  I often see many kids playing in the courtyard areas with lots of parents around.  Community!
  2. The City of Hyattsville Facebook page just posted that Halloween will run from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  So if any kids show up before or after, tell them to get lost!  How do you handle kids who show up without a costume?  Post in the comments section below.  What kind of candy do you give out?  If Kit-Kat is your answer, please post your address below.
  3. Hey, the Hyattsville CX is THIS SUNDAY!  Should be a great day to check out some fun in Magruder Park as these fearless bikers fly around, up and over obstacles in their pursuit of Hyattsville CX glory.  Lots of fun to watch.

YouTube

Weeding through all the real estate posts, I did come across a couple videos worth mentions.

  1. Bus Boys and Poets dedicated the Howard Zinn room last month.  There are bunch of videos of the event in case you missed it.
  2. A wonderful video of custom weaves and wigs from the Weave Salon at The Mall at Prince Georges.  Who knew?
  3. The Hyattsville Middle School chorus did a nice performance (in the rain, sticking with the theme!) that was posted a couple of days ago.
