5. On this day in 1999, a nasty blizzard bombarded the Great Lakes region, taking with it more than 100 lives, including 200 accidents on the New York State Thruway as it tore into Buffalo. The city got buried in 60 inches of snow over two weeks. Your own Patch editor was caught in this one along the Lake Erie coast. “Disaster” doesn’t quite describe the event.
