Hyattsville's Vacant Houses Part Five: Stemming Tide of Empty Homes

Here are some tips for dodging foreclosure and selling/buying a home.

Editor's Note: This is the final part in a in Hyattsville. After seeing dozens of "For Sale" signs and indications of uninhabited homes, Patch decided to give a general overview of how these vacancies are affecting Hyattsville.

Hyattsville doesn’t keep a list of vacant houses, so there is no way to determine how many of them have been cited, said city spokeswoman Abby Sandel.

“I know that [crime related to vacant houses has] been an issue in other communities,” she said. “There may be a few isolated incidents, but it isn’t widespread enough to be a concern here.

“I don’t know how Hyattsville is faring compared to comparable communities, but some of what we’re hearing suggests that Hyattsville’s transit accessibility coupled with our traditionally more affordable prices—by metro D.C. standards—has actually kept our housing market fairly resilient. 

There are 320 bank-owned properties in the 20781 zip code; 381 in the 20782 zip code; and 222 in zip code 20783, according to realtytrac.com. Some of them fall outside the Hyattsville city limits. The same database shows 1,796 bank owned properties in Prince George’s County.
