What Should Happen to Vacant Concordia School?

Reader wonders what could be done with vacant Longfellow Street campus of Concordia Lutheran School.

Now that a new school year has begun we are now aware of the vacant building that

The fact that our yard is next to the school property also creates some concerns, a few of which were raised recently in the Hyattsville HOPE listserv.

There are undoubtedly several creative uses for the property and I'm interested in finding out what Hyattsville residents , and particularly my neighbors in West Hyattsville, are thinking. Another school (private? charter?) would be an obvious solution.

Some have mentioned a community/recreation center, though it seems the City has taken a long time figuring out to do with some of the other properties it has acquired I suppose some sort of residential development might be feasible however any large multi-family project would likely meet strong opposition.

It is a quiet neighborhood with narrow streets and even the traffic from the relatively small school was disruptive, especially when parents "running late" would tear up and down the streets at 40 mph and above.

The immediate concern is the potential for trouble created by having a large abandoned building in a residential neioghborhood. Anyway I hope perhaps there is a story here and that the story spurs some positive action.

I like the idea of another school.

Yeah. It seems as if some old stories, particularly ones recently posted, did not migrate over toRead More the new site, yet. Our help desk is working on this problem, and we hope to have a resolution before long.
