3 Residents, Firefighter Treated for Injuries in Hyattsville Fire

One firefighter and three civilians, including a 5-year-old boy, were injured during a Hyattsville house fire Thursday morning.

Firefighters from Bunker Hill, Hyattsville and several other stations were called about 9:15 a.m. to a house fire in the 5000 block of 38th Avenue with reprts of people trapped in the house. Flames were showing from the rear of the split-level single family home when firefighters arrived.

Fire Department Spokesmen Mark Brady said high winds Thursday helped in the rapid advancement of the fire from the area of origin in the rear of the house through the front of the house. 

Two men and a 5-year-old boy were inside the home when the fire started and were able to escape before firefighters arrived. All three suffered minor injuries in the escape from their burning home, Brady said.

The three occupants were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

One firefighter was treated at the Burn Unit at Medstar Washington Hospital Center for burns to his ear.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with damage estimated at $75,000.
