Church Money Stolen in Robbery Near Hyattsville Bank

Police release image of suspect, ask for public's help in closing case.

The Hyattsville City Police Department is asking the public if they recognize the man in the above photo, who they say was one of two people involved in a recent robbery near the Capitol One Bank on the 6400 block of Belcrest Road.

The incident, which happened at about 1:10 p.m. on Monday, July 22, saw a single robber attack a woman who was about to enter the bank to deposit donations collected for her church. According to Lt. Chris Purvis, public information officer for the Hyattsville City Police Department, the victim reported that she was pushed down to the ground before the attacker grabbed a money pouch she was carrying and fled the scene in a vehicle driven by another suspect.

An email and text alert sent out to Hyattsville residents on Thursday described the incident as a "bank robbery" in its headline, but Purvis confirmed that the suspect did not enter the bank during the incident.

"It was near the bank, it wasn't a bank robbery," said Purvis in an interview.

The first suspect, the one who actually attacked the woman, is described as a black male between the ages of 18-24, wearing a white v-neck tee shirt, blue jeans and red shoes, according to the alert. There are scant details on the driver, only described as a black male in the alert.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Hyattsville City Police Department's criminal investigations section at 301-985-5060 in reference to case number 13-1919.
