HVFD to Honor Fallen Firefighters

Hyattsville fire department has lost three members to line of duty deaths in its 125 years.

The Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, will be holding a memorial and remembrance service to honor the memories of HVFD personnel who gave the last full measure in service to their community.

The service will mark the passing of volunteer firefighter Alan Sondej, who died on March 16, 1988 after sustaining burns during a January 1988 house fire. The service will also mark the 60th anniversary of the line-of-duty deaths of HVFD firefighters John Streets and William Stainback who lost their lives in October 1953 during when the ladder truck they were riding in was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle.

The service, which is open to the public, will be held at Saint Jerome's Catholic Church in Hyattsville on Saturday, March 16 at 11 a.m.
