Hyattsville Officer Nominated for All-Star Award

Sgt. Suzie Johnson is in the running for an America's Most Wanted prize.

Stephanie Kidwell nominated Sgt. Suzie Johnson for the title of America’s Most Wanted All-Star because of how the Hyattsville police officer has supported the community she has known her whole life.

“She always goes out of her way to help others and unlike most other officers her job doesn't stop when she's off duty,” Kidwell said. “She remembers everyone … she gives this city and its people 100 percent. She is an amazing woman and a great officer.”

The winner of the All-Star award receives $10,000 and a trip to the NASCAR Sprint Cup All-Star Race. Nominations and discussion about Johnson can be found on the AMW website.

Johnson, whose husband grew up in the destroyed house, got the community to make donations to support the displaced family. She organized a deal with to raise money for the family so they would have a place to stay and grieve the loss of their children, without worrying about bills, food and clothes, Kidwell said.

“I have known Suzie almost all my life, and I’m not like family or even a close friend,” Kidwell said. “I [was] in the back of her cruiser when I was a teenager but when she was driving me and my friends back to school, she gave us great advice about staying in school and staying out of trouble. She can be tough when she needs to be but she always tries to get people to see a bigger, better picture and put them on the right path in life.”

Johnson will be on the Fox 5 morning show today to discuss her nomination.

“[Suzie] is the type of officer who will have you in cuffs and [angry], but she won't give up on you and by the time she drops you off wherever you’re going, you'll thank her for what she has done or said because it will change your life.”
