A summary of crime and police activity in Mount Rainier.

The Mount Rainier Police Department’s weekly report is not intended to be a listing of every incident or call for service handled by the police department, but merely a general summary of incidents that may be of interest to the community. Some reports may be outside the date parameters due to extended investigations or other circumstances. Some cases are not included at all due to ongoing investigations.

August 24th:

3300 block of Chillum RoadWarrant service – 1:40am. Officers were flagged down by an individual who wished to lodge a complaint about a security guard in Hyattsville. During the course of the conversation officers learned that the man had an open attest warrant through the Metro Transit Police for failing to appear in court on an open container charge. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3300 block of Buchanan StreetProperty damage – 10:10am. The resident told officers that as he was leaving his apartment he noticed that the outside front door handle was damaged. He said that he did not notice the damage the previous evening. No evidence as to how the damage was inflicted could be found.

3400 block of Rhode Island AvenueIndecent exposure – 7:45pm. Officers on patrol observed a man standing in the alley grabbing his genitals. As officers exited their vehicles to further investigate a citizen stopped and told them that the man was exposing himself to passersby. Officers arrested the man, charged him with indecent exposure and delivered him to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3200 block of Rhode Island AvenueCriminal citation – 9:10pm. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for urinating in public.

August 23rd:

3700 block of 35th StreetTheft – 2:45pm. The victim told officers that two white males in khaki pants and light blue shirts came to his home and said they were from Castle Rock Alarm System. They told him that they needed to remove some of his alarm sensors so they could be upgraded. The victim requested that the men identify themselves and the two produced ID that did not show the company’s name. The victim then let them into his home and they removed several door and window sensors. They told the victim to contact Castle Rock to get the upgrade. The victim contacted Castle Rock and a representative told him that they did not send anyone to his residence and were unaware of the incident.

3500 block of Otis StreetTraffic – 10:35pm. Officers stopped a 2000 Honda Civic that was being driven without its headlights illuminated. Further investigation revealed that the driver did not have a license. He was cited accordingly and the vehicle was impounded.

August 22nd:

3400 block of Buchannan StreetVehicle impound – 8:45am. Officers on patrol discovered a 2004 Cadillac CTS displaying expired Virginia tags. The vehicle was issued a parking citation and impounded.

2700 block of Arundel RoadCredit card fraud/Theft – 11:10am. Officers met with the victim who said that he had left his credit card at home; and that this morning he discovered it had been stolen. He also said that the card had been used to make several purchases. He contacted his credit card company and cancelled the card. The victim could not think of anyone who may have stolen or used his credit card.

3300 block of Rhode Island AvenueCriminal citation – 11:45am. Officers issued a man a criminal citation for drinking an alcoholic beverage in public.

August 21st:

3300 block of Chillum Road (7-11)Theft – 1:55pm. The store clerk told officers that a Latino male came into the store and asked for three packs of cigarettes. The clerk gave the man the cigarettes and he left the store without paying for them. Officers canvassed the area for the suspect after getting his description from the store’s surveillance video with negative results.

3200 block of Queenstown DriveWarrant service – 8:05pm. Officers responded to assist Queenstown security personnel with an individual they suspected had an open arrest warrant. Further investigation revealed that the individual in question had an open warrant through Prince George’s County for malicious destruction of property and 2nd degree assault. He was arrested on the warrant and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 20th:

3700 block of 37th StreetDestruction of property – 7:25am. Officers responded for the report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance. The man was upset that the residents would not let him into the home. The man broke several flower pots and other items in front of the residence. He was arrested, charged with destruction of property and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

3400 block of Perry StreetVehicle impound – 9:15am. Officers on patrol observed a 2006 Honda Accord parked in a City parking lot with a flat tire. Upon further inspection officers discovered that the vehicle had an altered expiration sticker. The sticker showed that the tags expired in 2014 when in fact they actually expired in 2011. The vehicle was impounded.

4200 block of Kaywood DriveIdentity theft – 4:15pm. The victim told officers that over the past couple of weeks someone used his name and personal information to purchase several cell phones from Verizon and AT&T. The victim said that he did not purchase them and did not give any one else permission to purchase them.

3300 block of Buchannan StreetTheft from auto – 11:05pm. The owner of a 2000 Nissan Maxima told officers that her parked his vehicle at about 5:45pm this afternoon but did not lock it. When he returned to the vehicle he discovered that someone had entered the vehicle and stole his wallet from the center console.

August 19th:

3200 block of Otis StreetDeath report – 9:55am. Officers responded to assist fire/rescue personnel with a deceased 52 year old female. The officers’ learned that the woman had been suffering from several serious medical issues. Her death was caused by her medical problems and no foul play was indicated. Relatives made arrangements with a funeral home for removal of the deceased’s remains.

3500 block of Rhode Island AvenueTheft from auto – 12:10pm. The owner of a 2009 Honda Civic told officers that she parked and locked her vehicle at about 11pm on the 18th. When she returned to her vehicle she discovered that someone had smashed out the passenger window and stole the vehicle’s air bag. No evidence/witnesses could be located.

Queens Chapel Road and Chillum RoadMV collision – 6:45pm. Officers responded for the report of the traffic signals malfunctioning. When the officers arrived they found the lights on flash and traffic snarled. They also found that a 2007 Jeep Cherokee failed to yield to the flashing red light, entered the intersection and collided with a 2006 Chevy truck. The driver of the Jeep was cited accordingly and officers directed traffic in the intersection until State Highway arrived to reset the lights.

3100 block of Queens Chapel RoadWarrant service – 12:55am. While investigating a complaint of an unwanted guest, officers located a subject in the area that appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Further investigation revealed that the man had an open arrest warrant through Prince George’s County for failing to appear in court on a possession of marijuana charge. He was arrested and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

August 18th:

3700 block of 37th StreetVandalism – 12:05am. Officers first responded at about 10:30pm on the 17thfor the report of an intoxicated man being disorderly and arguing with family members. The man eventually left the property and the homeowner told officers that she did not want her relative back in the home. At about 12:05am officers returned to the residence because the man had returned and broken a window. He was arrested, charged with destruction of property and delivered to the custody of DOC in Hyattsville.

4500 block of 30th StreetVandalism to auto – 12:50pm. The owner of a 2006 Ford told officers that her vehicle was parked in front of her house, locked and secure. When she came out to her vehicle this afternoon she discovered the doors unlocked and the trunk ransacked. There were no signs of forced entry and nothing was stolen. A canvass of the area was conducted with negative results
