Local Firefighters Awarded Medals of Valor

Personnel will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze Medal of Valor at an awards luncheon held at Martins Crosswinds in Greenbelt April 27.

Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department members Stephen Whitman and Nik Zupanic will be the recipients of Medal of Valor Awards.

Whitman and Zupanic, along with others, are being recognized for their work at an apartment fire on Toledo Place in February 2010. Those listed here and several other members of the HVFD and Prince George’s Fire Department, including HVFD Deputy Chief Matt Leonard and PGFD Technician Steve Tabak, received Emergency Services Awards from county Fire Chief Eugene A. Jones in October for the incident.

Personnel will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze Medal of Valor at an awards luncheon held at Martins Crosswinds in Greenbelt April 27. Another member of the Co. 1 crew involved in the rescue, Prince George's County Fire/EMS Lieutenant George Flanagan, is also among those being recognized.

Earlier this year Flanagan, now assigned to the Berwyn Heights station, was awarded the "2010 National Emergency Technician of the Year" by the The Veterans of Foreign War for his actions at the fire.
