Overzealous Griller Gives Neighbors Gas Scare

A liberal dose of lighter fluid had some Longfellow Street residents thinking a gas line had ruptured.

Where there's smoke, there's fire, right?

A pyrotechnically inclined grilling enthusiast had neighbors calling utility companies to report the smell of what they thought was a massive gas leak.

Last evening, Longfellow Street residents near the intersection with 43rd street reported a strong gas-like smell in their neighborhood. The residents became even more concerned when the gas-smell was replaced by visible smoke wafting in the air.

A technician from Washington Gas arrived later and discovered a nearby resident had been grilling with a large amount of lighter fluid.

If you ever do smell gas, Washington Gas advises that you do not attempt to locate the leak. Instead call 911 and the Washington Gas Emergency Leak Line at 1-800-752-7520 to report the incident.
