Police Investigate Assault Reported During Lacrosse Game

A Northeast High School student was injured during an altercation with a DeMatha Catholic High School student Sunday at Brooklyn Park Middle School.

Anne Arundel County Police are investigating the alleged assault of a 17-year-old lacrosse player who was injured during a game Sunday in Brooklyn Park. The players from Northeast were reportedly not participating in a game that was sanctioned or sponsored by Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

According to a police press release, a 16-year-old player cross-checked the Northeast player, hitting him in the "head area," during an altercation between players.

About 1:40 p.m. Oct. 16 officers responded to Brooklyn Park Middle School for a reported assault. Once on the scene, they learned that the lacrosse game between Northeast and was interrupted by the altercation between players.

As game officials attempted to get control of the players, police said the 16-year-old struck the 17-year-old with his lacrosse stick. The 17-year-old fell to the ground and received medical attention from a trainer who was on the scene.

Police said both players were wearing their lacrosse equipment, including helmets and gloves.

Fire personnel took the 17-year-old to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in critical but not life-threatening condition, where he was treated and released.

Police continue to investigate the incident while it awaits review by the State's Attorney's Office.
