Police Officer Shot at Chillum Nightclub

Police officer working second job suffers gunshot wound at area nightclub.

A shooting at a Chillum area nightclub early Saturday left one Prince George's County police officer shot, but expected to live.

"Our officer suffered non-life threatening injuries," according to a tweet from Julie Parker, public information officer for the Prince George's County Police Department.

According to Parker, an off-duty county police officer was injured while working a second job at the Galaxy Nightclub at 2031 University Boulevard shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 28.

The officer was working "secondary employment," according to Parker.

According to Parker, this is the fifth time in roughly 18 months that a Prince George's County Police officer has been involved in a shooting incident.

At least three subjects were detained by county police in connection with the shooting, according to the Prince George's County Police Twitter feed.

While crime anywhere is unacceptable, I believe that this area is Langley Park, or Lewisdale, NOT Chillum. We have our share of issues and do not wish to take on more unnecessarily. Like the City of Hyattsville, we too are concerned about our image. Thanks.

Maybe it's within the boundaries of the unincorporated http://www.mdp.state.md.us/MSDC/census/cen2000/maps/PLC00/prinplc.pdf area referred to by authorities as Chillum, but you're right--most people would call it Langley Park or Lewisdale.

Yeah, I used the official boundaries of the Census Designated Place of Chillum, Md, and this incident happened along the Chillum side of the northern CDP border with Langley Park.

I would agree. Chillum would not claim this nightclub. Its address is University Boulevard, Hyattsville. We who live in the nearby communities know that the commercial area and apartments along University Blvd. on either side of Riggs Road are in Langley Park. Don't give this trouble to Chillum. As a member of the Chillum-Ray Citizens Association I can tell you this story is about Langley Park! I think the Prince George's County Police Department would agree, especially in terms of its patrol sectors. When they speak to our association and provide crime statistics there is a definite distinction between Chillum, Chillum-Ray and Langley Park. This behavior, while disturbing anywhere, is more frequently observed in Langley Park.

Hey guys, the county police have provided an updated on the shooting, releasing charges, a mugshot and the identity of the injured officer. http://patch.com/A-w3wF I've also kept the location of the shooting as listed in Chillum. Though the shooting occurred on the border with Lagnley Park, it occurred on the Chillum side of the road. Chillum is officially everything south of University Boulevard, east of New Hampshire Avenue, west of Hyattsville and Mount Rainier. Langley Park is everything north of University Boulevard, south of the NW Anacostia, west of Adelphi and straddles New Hampshire Avenue.

The Washington Post report on this incident identifies the location as Langley Park.

If they want to be loose with geographic names, that's their problem. I identify locations in my stories according to the Maryland Department of Planning's map of Census Incorporated Places and Census Designated Places. You can check the map for yourself here. http://www.mdp.state.md.us/msdc/census/cen2010/maps/place10/prin_places10Roads.pdf To place the incident in Langley Park, when it is objectively is not in Langley Park would be a disservice to its residents.

If you ask the Prince George's County Police Department what "beat" this incident occurred in I'd bet they would say "A6" - Langley Park, not Chillum (A2). Anyone who lives in Langley Park or Chillum knows this incident occurred in Langley Park. Ask the officer who was injured if she was injured in Langley Park or Chillum!

And if I used the Prince George's County Police Department's beat map as my geographical reference material, then I'd identify locations in my stories accordingly. But I don't. Because if I did, I'd have to describe crimes occurring in say, the Toledo Terrace area as in Hyattsville (The county A-5 beat encompasses all of Hyattsville as well as unincorporated areas just to the west of the city's borders). And if I did that, then I'd have board members from the Hyattsville CDC complaining, not unjustifiably, that my reporting was giving the municipality a bad image. But I have a solution for area residents who don't want to be linked by geographic nomenclature to the various troubles of your neighbors: ask the state legislature for permission to incorporate into a municipality, town or village and draw your own borders.
