Shooting at Mount Rainier CVS

Multiple police jurisdictions are on the scene of a shooting.

Update, March 13, 1:22  a.m.: The intersection of Chillum and Queens Chapel roads was strewn with police cars from Hyattsville, Prince George's County and Greenbelt Saturday night as law enforcement worked to process the scene of a multiple shooting that occurred about 7:30 p.m.

According to county police spokesman Cpl. Evan Baxter county police were called to a parking lot in front of the CVS at Queens Chillum Shopping Center.

Shoppers said an individual was throwing things at cars and people and running around the parking lot shouting at people, Baxter told Patch later.

As officers were returning fire a bullet from the suspect’s gun struck an officer's gun belt. The officer was also taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The gun belt saved that officer's life, Baxter said.

A suspect, who was allegedly acting irrationally, opened fire on the officers, who then returned fire.

Update, March 12, 10 p.m.: One police officer was shot and is in stable condition. A suspect was shot, but Baxter said he could not confirm the person's condition. No one had died as of about 9:30 p.m.

Two suspects are in police custody and no one involved in the incident is on the loose, Baxter said.

Further details of the crime, including why police stopped the suspects' car, will come to light during the investigation, he said.

There will be an internal review of the incident, Baxter said.

A witnesses to the incident -- a Hyattsville woman who was turning out of the CVS parking lot when she heard the shots -- said she came back to the scene and saw a victim down on the ground with police over him. She told Patch that initially the man was inside a car.

Two police dogs were on the scene but neither had been removed from its caretaker's car when Patch left the scene earlier.

Hyattsville police were not part of the shooting, but were there to provide backup to the county police, Sgt. Chris Purvis, of the HPD said.

Update, 8:55 p.m.: Hyattsville Patch Editor Sarah Nemeth is on the scene of the shooting. She reports that multiple shots were fired earlier. Witnesses said they didn't see the shooting but heard the shots.
