Sidewalk Construction Coming to 38th Avenue.

State Highway Administration is going to help fund a sidewalk along an area where a teen was recently killed in a hit-and-run.

The State Highway Administration has approved $220,000 for construction of sidewalks on 38th Street, the site of a fatal hit-and-run on Dec. 18.

Heading south on 38th Street/Avenue toward Brentwood, the sidewalk eventually ends.

“We have asked the state to fund sidewalks in this area for years, and they finally confirmed that they will reimburse the city for the cost of construction,” said Hyattsville Mayor William Gardiner. “The city will manage the project, and the city will pay for all surveying and engineering costs associated with the project,” he said.

Hyattsville will be reimbursed by the Maryland SHA for constructing sidewalk along 38th Avenue between 37th Place to the northwest branch of the Anacostia River, said SHA spokeswoman Lora Rakowski.

"The sidewalk segment will enhance pedestrian safety in the area and provide access for those accessing the Metro," Rakowsik said.
